A Day of Thrifting
Do any of you guys have siblings? Well me I have a few; I mean if you call 12 a few. Then again in this particular instance I am talking about my older sister. I am the second oldest out of my 12 other siblings, and then before me was my big sister Keah. She actually isn’t that much older than me, only 3 years. To get to the point growing up my family always liked to dress us alike, almost as if we were twins. Then as she started to grow, I always used to get her handy downs. I am pretty sure that you guys have had that experience with your older siblings. Most of the time I didn’t mind because I got all the cool shoes, she outgrew and some of her awesome shirts.
What I didn’t know was that some of the stuff my sister had got passed down to her from my older cousin, which I thought was cool. I loved the thought of taking what someone else thought of was old and bring it life. It was a sort of confidence I felt in my style knowing that this piece of clothing was unique. I heard a lyric in a song called Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis that said, one’s man’s trash is another man’s come up. I truly and still to this day this that’s true. Well with that love of clothing it drove me to love thrifting even more. Which wasn’t really a problem seeing as though my mom was actually the one who taught me how to thrift.
So, this past week I took a trip to a thrift store that I have never been to before. The crazy thing about this is; it was only two blocks away from my middle school. The name of the store was Thrifty’s Georgia Avenue Thrift Store, and when I got there from the outside the building looked small. Then when I walked through the door it turned out to be pretty spacious. I was excited when I started to look around, it had been years since the last time that I had been thrifting.
I immediately found myself in the shirts/vest/ and coats aisle, and my eyes went directly to a cheetah print fur vest that had a black corset on the waist. It was so cute that I fell in love but unfortunately to my luck it wasn’t my size. Well a couple to looks father down and found this beautiful black fur coat from Casual Time. It is lined with a beautiful slick fabric. The buttons are beautiful and have the embroidery of a ships anchor on them. They marked the size of a size extra-large, but the company sized it a 14. The store also priced this item at $19.95
Next I was scrummaging through the skirts to see if I could finally find a plaid skirt. I had finally found not just one but a couple of them. Unfortunately, not all of them were my size but I was able to get a green/white/and black plaid skirt. I was so happy when I found them, this is only the start of my collection. I want to be able to find at least maybe 5 more, so that I can have options to choose from. Well the skirt is originally sold by LOFT and is a size 8. The store priced this item at $4.00.
After finally coming to peace with my finding in that aisle I decided to move on to the next one. As I walk down to was seemed to be the pants aisle, I come across these beautiful olive-green pants. I fell in love when I say them, and they were the size I needed them to be it was a steal. The pants were originally sold my Montery Canyon. The thrift stored priced these pants at $9.00.
Not too far away from the beautiful olive grassy fields I came across a pair of nude colored pants made by Sag-Harbor. When I picked them up and realized how long they were and what they actually looked like it was an automatic yes in my head. They came in a size 12 and the store priced the pants at $6.00. As I was wondering around, I came across an item that seemed a bit out of place. I picked it up it was a beautiful suede black skirt that has a very delicate design but on the inside is lined with a burgundy fabric material that shines through to the outside. The garment is beautiful, and it flows nicely across the body. The skirt was originally made by Jaloux/Zalu, and the thrift store had the item priced at $4.00.
The last aisle that I went down was the shirts/and hoodies, I was actually on a mission to find some turtle-neck shirts. The irony of this is that when I was younger, I hated turtlenecks, they were uncomfortable, and I felt like my neck didn’t have enough room to breathe. Well look at me know in a thrift store searching high and low for them. Thankfully I came across a few, so as I went to look for the perfect one, I found a royal blue short-sleeve turtleneck made by Banana Republic. It came in a size medium and was priced at $6.00. I was actually pretty happy about finally finding one, but I really wanted a long sleeve one. Next thing I know I found a beautiful burgundy long sleeve turtleneck made by Express. I literally felt complete when I found the shirt. It came in a size small, which is a bit smaller than me, but it stresses well so I’m okay. Also, the store priced the shirt at $4.00.
After all that work going around the store looking high and low for different pieces to add to my wardrobe, I felt complete with what I had in hand. For all of the items I got from the thrift store that day I only paid a $56 in total. That is a good price for all of the items that I found, I felt so accomplished. Plus, the number of outfit ideas that were going through my head was insane. I can’t wait to put some outfits together with all the pieces I got.
Thrifting is an amazing thing, do you thrift?
