Taco Tuesday
Do any of you guys watch anime? Naruto? One Piece? Attack on Titan? Okay you have to know what Dragon Ball Super is; what about the show Sailor Moon. Well either way weather you watch, stan it, or love it doesn’t really matter. If you don’t you should try it, if you do then continue to rock on. I have been watching anime for as long as I can remember, growing up my cousins loved watching Dragon Ball, Samurai Jack, and Pokémon. So, watching anime has always been the norm for me. That changed a little in elementary school, fifth grade to be more specific.
I remember that I used to collect Pokémon cards, that was my favorite show growing up. Whenever I went to the store with my mom or someone in my family would go, I would always tell them to get a pack of cards to add to my collection. Let me tell you guys my collection was huge! It wasn’t only just mine though, I had got passed down some Pokémon cards from my father. Then, one day I decided to take my Pokémon cards to school with me; and boy was that a mistake. As soon as I pulled out that giant metal tin can I had my cards in it was over. I got teased so bad that it made me never want to watch anime again. If you didn’t know DC kids can be ruthless in elementary school. I can distinctly remember going home that day and putting my cards away and never touching them again.
Fast-forward a couple years, I am now back to my old ways watching anime, but this time I don’t care who knows and calls me weird. I know I am weird, very weird to be specific but that is a part of what makes me unique. Also, now a days it seems that a lot of people are watching anime because a few celebrities said it, so they want to hop on the wave. When they know they never liked it and probably used to bully those who openly like anime. I think it’s a fad that may pass but it is bringing out its true fans and giving them the confidence to show that there is nothing wrong with watching anime. I believe this has its pro’s and con’s; you still have those ignorant people who still try to call you out because you watch anime. The gag is that, “Black & Brown girls love anime too!”
As I was on twitter one day and tweeted “Can anyone give me some new anime suggestions?” The next thing I know about 3 mins later I get a DM from a page called the DMV Anime Club that has a gif of Pikachu that said join us. I was interested just by the name of the page, so I started to my twitter investigation to see what they were about. I found out that it was just a bunch of people from different backgrounds in the DMV that have come together to form this group of people who have the same interest. Which happens to be anime! I was excited when I found this out, because you don’t understand how hard it is to want to talk about anime but not have any friends who are interested in that stuff. Then again for the past two years I made my old roommate Trisha watch Naruto with me, then I put my best friend onto Naruto as well. So, I had maybe 2 people to talk about with, but they weren’t as well versed as me.
So, the DMV Anime club decided to put together a taco Tuesday this week at Taco Bamba. This would only be the second meet up that I went to for the club. The first one was a kick back, and that night a lot happened which is a story for another day. So, I decided I would go; I didn’t know who specifically was going to be there, so I messaged the person who created the event. As I walked into the restaurant, I thought I saw her, but I didn’t want to be a creep and just walk up to her. On top of that I am terrible with remembering names, so it would’ve ended badly. I decided to just message her to tell her I arrived and to ask where they were. About 6 mins went by and at some point, they walked into the bar. I started to get restless so gathered up my confidence and walked over to them. To my surprise they recognized me from my pictures. (side note: I wish I had the skill to remember names so easily) I was happy about that and it shook off all of my nerves.
As we sat at the bar, I ordered the simple Sangria which was a part of the happy hour. That sangria was so good, I was just disappointed that it didn’t come with actual fruit in it but just a garnish and cinnamon stick. Which did give the aesthetics a better look, but it would’ve tasted better with the fresh fruit. As we were waiting for our drinks we went ahead and decided it was time to order some food. I ended up getting the taco Bamba and the spicy ‘shroom. In all honesty I have never been to Taco Bamba before, so I just picked random things off the menu. It usually goes well for me, so I was hoping this wouldn’t be any different.
As the food came out and got sat in front of me, I couldn’t even tell which taco was which. It wasn’t until I bit into them, I could differentiate. The tortilla’s that the tacos came in where so good, and I was happy that they doubled them because if not then everything inside would fall out. The Taco Bamba had skirt steak, chorizo, grilled guacamole, cotija, pickled onions, pickled Fresno, cilantro, and chicharron. On the other hand, the Spicy ‘Shroom had chipotle portabellas, grilled corn, pickled onions, heart of palm, cilantro, and pepitas. The different flavors that each of these tacos had my taste buds dancing. I also am a fan of spicy food so the Spicy ‘Shroom tacos had the perfect amount of spice to them. I loved the Taco Bamba but after a few bites into the Spicy ‘Shroom taco I kept getting a bad after taste in my mouth. So, at one point I took all the ingredients out and just ate the tortillas. Overall, I can say that my experience at Taco Bamba was a good one, even if I didn’t agree with all the food, I still had fun!
This Taco Tuesday I had with the DMV Anime Club was so much fun. I am still trying my best to warm up to the group but little by little I am blending in and making memories. I am finally happy that I have a group of people that I can talk about anime with.
