The Black Owned Skin Care Series Pt. 1 SonnieSea Natural Review
Hey guys, it’s been a while since my last update, it’s been so much going on in my life. I can’t wait until I am able to share everything that I’ve been up to lately. If you guys do follow me on Instagram, you know that I have been on the hunt for some black owned skin care and beauty brands. I am a huge supporter of black owned business; I wish to see them all thrive. In the end my goal is to end up having every skin care or beauty product in my bathroom be made by a black owned business. In all honesty who knows better than us about our own skin problems. This is something that I am really excited about because not only am I able to support other businesses, but it is fun being able to try different products. It’s almost like going in the fitting room and trying on clothes; you have to figure out which products truly work for you.
Now that you know the situation at hand lets dive into the first company that I will be reviewing. I recently ordered some beauty products from SonnieSea Natural Products. Before I give you all the detail on what I ordered let me give you a little back story. This company is owned and run by Sonquela Seabron who happens to be my aunt on my mother’s side. She makes every product from scratch her-self, and each and every product is filled with all-natural ingredients and oils. She started making all-natural products in 2017 and has been creating new all-natural products ever since. Since 2017 her business has continued to grow, and she has been able to do many pop-up shops as well.
SonnieSea Natural offer a wide variety of products to its consumers. There is the Liquid African Black soap, Bar African Black soap, the sugar scrub, a lip balm, deodorant, and much more. That’s just a sample list of some products from off the top of my head. Now let’s get into what you all have been waiting for…PRODUCT REVIEW! First off let me tell you guys what I ended up getting. Before that let me make this part clear, I did pay full price for these products she did not give them to me. Also, my aunt is unaware of the skin care/beauty brand search that I am doing as well. All she knows is that I hit her up saying that I wanted to buy some of her products.
Now that we have cleared the air for any misunderstandings let’s dive right into this review. So, I decided to order a sugar scrub, a liquid African Black soap, a violet oatmeal-based shea body butter, a lip balm and a soap bar from her new collection that she just recently produced. If you didn’t realize it yet all of the products that I ordered are basically the type of products anyone would normally use in their shower routine. I would first use a liquid soap to cleanse my body, next I would use a scrub or exfoliator to polish and get dry skin off. Then lastly, I would use the bar soap in the end to remove any access residue or to just clean the scrub off. In the end these products are perfect because they fit right into my routine.
When I was using the African Black soap, first of all I almost got it in my eye because I accidently squeezed the bottle too hard. It can be pretty dangerous if you aren’t paying attention. I can say this honestly that compared to the “all-natural African Black Soap” you would buy in a store this product is the only one that did not make my skin feel tight, sticky, and dried out after I finished using it. Yes, I am speaking about the products that claim to be made out of all-natural ingredients, you can feel the difference in the texture of the soap and also the feeling as you connect the product to your skin. You can also tell the difference when you look at it, a lot of the products on store shelves have a dark color tone to them. Little do you know that African Black soap is supposed to be a deep brown color. Almost the color of when rainwater and a little bit of dirk mixes together. So, the African Black soap get the thumbs up from me and my skin.
Next, there was the sugar scrub; which is something that I have always loved from my aunt’s product line. I can remember her giving me a small basket of skin care goodies one year and inside of it was a small jar of the sugar scrub. I can tell you now that I fell in love with the scrub then. Every time you apply the scrub on your skin it starts to dissolve immediately because of your body heat. The feeling that your skin gets after you scrub your body for only even a minute, is as smooth as a female-legs feel after you shave and put on some lotion. I know that every female has had that feeling of their body feeling so smooth and slick after you shave. It’s that exact same feeling but without having to shave. Yes, even with hair on your legs you are still able to get that same feeling as you wash your body.
After I finished with the scrub, I pulled out 1 of the 3 soaps that I received. In my package I received two extra pieces of soap from my aunt’s new bar soap line. These soaps won’t be ready until December unfortunately, but I was lucky to be able to try out these products early. I ended up using that orange and crème colored soap. I know that everyone has mixed feelings about bar soap because some bar soaps hydrate your skin and others will dry out your skin. As soon as I rubbed the soap against my skin, I received this smooth layer of hydration on top of my skin. Instead of my skin feeling dried out it felt hydrated. Even while I had the water running on my body; that would usually quickly dry your skin out if you were using a bar soap that did dry out your skin. I was so shocked but really happy at the same time. That just shows me how much work that my aunt puts in with each and every product she makes.
Once my shower was done, I used the violet oatmeal-based shea body butter. First thing I need to say about this shea body butter is that it literally melts on and into your skin as you rub it on. You don’t need to do a whole lot of rubbing in order for it to seep into your pores. This product was made like it was meant to be put on your skin. Which is true it was made for that purpose, but a lot of products aren’t able to that even though it may have been made for that exact reason. Sometimes you have to exert more energy to put on lotion or a body butter. But putting on a body butter shouldn’t be a lot of work; it should be simple and easy. As I rubbed the shea butter on my body, I felt so smooth, protected, and hydrated all over. With this shea butter I won’t need to worry about dry skin at all this winter. Well until I run out…
After that to finish everything off I put on the brand-new lip balm that she created. The thing is you guys I always have a problem finding a lip balm that won’t dry out my lips. I also have a big problem when it comes to biting my lips; I’ll do it even if I have on a lip balm. Then there are the lip balms that just don’t work for me. They will dry out my lips more. For example, I can’t use Carmex or Blistex, and I did have some problems using EOS. I have very sensitive skin, and I am prone to breaking out very quickly and easily if something does not agree with my skin. It has now been almost 2 and a half hours since I first put on the lip balm. My lips are still moisturized, and I have yet to bite my lips. This is a big accomplishment because that is the longest, I have been able to resist biting my lips or just the simple fact that my lips are still moisturized.
By the time I was dressed and ready to start the day I felt like the best possible me. By using all of these products my body not only feels hydrated but so does my soul. When you have a good skincare routine, you start to feel better about yourself; and when that happens your soul starts to smile. Skin and health care are all a part of self-love and being able to love yourself. If you take pride in the products that you put on your skin, you start to feel differently. I am not saying that you guys need to buy the entire collection to be able to feel this way. But do know that and don’t forget loving your skin is loving yourself.
Well, guys thank you for coming with me on this journey. This is only the first black owned skincare company that I will be reviewing. If you want to be able to purchase some products from the SonnieSea Natural line, then you can follow the company on both Instagram and Facebook. The 8 oz bottle of liquid African Black soap I purchased was for $10. The 4 oz. sugar scrub I purchased was $10. The home-made soaps are just $2.50 each. The 4 oz. shea butter I purchased was $10 as well. Lastly the lip balm was a gift added to the package that I received. SonnieSea Natural offers a wide variety, such as unrefined Shea butter, African black soap, Natural Sugar, Essential Carrier & fragrances, and so much more. You can message the pages to for all orders. In the end I loved every single product that I received. All I can say is that if all the other companies I decide to try are as good as SonnieSea Natural Products then the decision at the end will be a hard one. This was a great way to start of the hunt for black owned skincare and beauty brands!
Can’t wait to share who’s next!
